Stroke Services

Q2 Irene James: Will the Minister make a statement on stroke services in Wales? OAQ(3)1212(HSS)

The Minister for Health and Social Services (Edwina Hart):I recognise that stroke services in Wales must improve and I have designated stroke services as one of my priorities.   I have had many discussions with patients, the NHS, the Stroke Association, AMs and with officials on the action being taken to improve these services right across Wales

Questions 3 to 10 were answered in Plenary.

Diabetes

Q11 William Graham: Will the Minister outline policies to increase an awareness of type 2 diabetes in Wales? OAQ(3)1197(HSS)

Edwina Hart: Through Health Challenge Wales, we have provided literature and web-based advice about how to reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The national service framework for diabetes has also raised the profile of diabetes services across Wales.

Foot Care Services

Q12 Christine Chapman: Will the Minister make a statement on foot care services for older people in Wales? OAQ(3)1219(HSS)

Edwina Hart: I recognise the importance of good foot care for the elderly. Provision of NHS chiropody and podiatry services is a matter for local determination by local health boards. I have asked health service planners across Wales to make improvements to the delivery of therapy services including chiropody and podiatry.

Unsafe Staffing Levels

Q13 Peter Black: Will the Minister make a statement on the reporting of unsafe staffing levels within the Welsh NHS? OAQ(3)1205(HSS)

Edwina Hart: If LHBs have concerns about staffing levels, this is reported to regional offices and any difficulties in medical recruitment are reported to the Welsh Assembly Government on a monthly basis. A junior doctor review group has been established to develop plans to improve recruitment and retention in NHS Wales.

Equality of Access

Q14 Andrew R.T. Davies: Will the Minister make a statement on equality of access to NHS services in Wales? OAQ(3)1184(HSS)

Edwina Hart: The NHS in Wales is working hard to ensure that all Welsh residents have equal access to the high-quality health services they need, no matter which part of Wales they live.

Workforce Access

Q15 Peter Black: Will the Minister make a statement on workforce planning in the NHS in Wales? OAQ(3)1204(HSS)

Edwina Hart: An integrated workforce planning system was introduced into NHS Wales in June 2008. Training has built capacity and capability within LHBs and a workforce configuration tool was made available to analyse future workforce needs. The workforce unit has analysed 2009 plans and provided feedback which will improve processes next year.
